Meeting Wrap-up: June 7, 2011 Woodstock Town Council Meeting

June 8, 2011

Here it is, our first meeting wrap-up and video for a Town Council meeting. First on deck: Woodstock. We started this project after last month’s meeting of the Strasburg Council, so only New Market may complain about not being first. Again, we’re not sure where coverage of Town Council meetings is headed–we may not get video of them all every month–but we consider this a good practice run regardless. I think the audio kinks have been worked out, thanks to figuring out the zoom mic function on my HandyCam, but please, as always, feedback is welcome about the utility of these videos. After all, part of the point of this exercise is so if consumer video equipment can easily be used to provide a quality video record of government business so that someday this project may not even need to exist as governments begin to make their own recordings.

As always, though its certainly tempting, no commentary on the meeting’s contents–the video record is here to make sure that members comments are heard in their full context. Three quick notes, though. One, this was a surprisingly well attended meeting, given the town’s relative size compared to other governing bodies in the county. Two, I found the Thank You for Not Smoking sign very quaint, a throwback to a time when smoking was so prevalent that people actually had to be asked not to smoke in certain places (rather than through force of law). Finally, we got a shout-out at this meeting from the Mayor. In the interest of full disclosure, I consider Mayor McCleary a good friend. We want to remind readers that we aren’t covering these meetings for the governments–we’re there for the people, to make sure they understand what their governments are doing with their mandate and with their tax dollars. Still, its nice to have the importance of open government acknowledged by elected officials and appointed staff, and we appreciate their cooperation in our efforts. With that, enjoy our wrap-up. You can view the entire meeting as a playlist here or view the individual sections below.
